SEO For Beginners: Header Tags

By June 1, 2016March 25th, 2024SEO.

Lesson 7

It’s not certain whether Header Tags still help with SEO. Some argue they do and some argue they don’t, however, I believe that you should use header tags correctly because there’s a chance that you may receive a competitive advantage.
By using these tags you can also create nicer looking content.

Header Tags

Header tags are used to separate the headings of a page from the rest of the content.

There are 6 different header tags:
h1 (most important)
h2
h3
h4
h5
h6 (least important)

These tags use a hierarchy structure and an example of how to use header tags can be seen below.

<h1>Main Heading</h1>
<h2>Secondary Heading 1</h2>
<h3>Sub-section of the secondary Heading 1</h3>
and so on...

Most WordPress themes that are coded correctly use the h1 tag for the post title.
Example: For this page my title post is SEO For Beginners: Header Tags and my theme automatically put this text in the h1 tag.

Tips

1. The h1 tag should only be used once per a page.

2. Since WordPress themes that are properly coded automatically add the h1 tag to the title post, you should never use that tag in the post content. Always begin with the h2 tag.

3. Use header tags to enhance user experience by clearly showing the content on the page.

4. Do not stuff your tags with keywords, keep it natural.

5. Do not use header tags as hidden text. Any hidden text can result in penalties for your site, especially if the hidden part is something that affects SEO.
Google is smarter than you may think. 😉
