SEO For Beginners: What Makes A Website Rank?

By May 31, 2016March 26th, 2024SEO.

Lesson 5

To be able to do any SEO, you first need to understand what exactly makes a website rank high in search results.

What Makes A Website Rank?

Domain Name

Using keywords in your domain name is an advantage but you need to find a balance between keywords and creating a brand-friendly domain.

URL Address

It is important to create search engine friendly URL’s that humans can read and understand and contain your keywords.

Website Loading Time

A faster loading website is better for Google and their users.
Google has publicly stated that page speed is a ranking factor.

XML Sitemap

An XML sitemap ensures that search engines are aware of all the content on your website.

HTML Sitemap

An HTML sitemap is a page that links to all of your pages to keep that link-juice flowing.
Linking a HTML sitemap in the footer has become a standard on-site SEO practice.
This makes it easy for Google and your visitors to navigate around your website and to find all of your website pages.

Content Quality

It is important to write effectively for humans while also including keywords and correct HTML tags for crawlers.
Try to avoid duplicate content at all costs! Because Google tries to show pages with unique information in it’s search results and for this reason it frowns upon websites that contain pages with basically the same content.

Broken Links

A broken link is a link that doesn’t work and often results in an error page.
This happens when a link points to a webpage that has been deleted or moved.
Broken links will absolutely harm your search engine ranking!

Internal Links

Internal linking improve the ranking of your pages by sharing link-juice between them.

External Links

You can think of external links as a vote to your website.
The more ‘trusted’ votes your website receives, the more respect you gain from Google and therefore the higher you rank.
However, you will need to try and avoid links from spammy websites as they represent a harmful vote.

More Ranking Factors

Please note that there are about 200 ranking factors but the ones I explained above are the basics you need to know.
