You can have the best website and product in the world but it’s pointless if no one knows about it.
In this post I will be discussing the top 8 ways to get more traffic to your website for free!
Of course ranking No.1 in Google would be ideal but this is not guaranteed which is why I did not include it in this list.
Good SEO will definitely give you a competitive advantage and increase your chances of ranking but it is never guaranteed and anyone who guarantees rankings from SEO is lying.
Now just because these methods are free, it doesn’t mean that they are inferior to paid techniques. In fact, I believe that in the long run these free traffic methods work even better!
In addition, using these free methods will increase your brands awareness and reputation.
Before we get started I would like to point out that obtaining free traffic takes time and effort but once your efforts begin to snowball you will notice a massive increase in traffic.
If you are looking instant traffic then unfortunately you will need to invest in paid ads, mailing lists or other paid services, but keep in mind that once money stops flowing then so does your marketing, unlike the free traffic strategies.
Top 8 Free Ways to Get More Traffic to your Website
Blogging is a very powerful way to grow your traffic, customers and even your brand which is the reason I strongly recommend that every website has a blog.
Even if you do not have much time on your hands to blog on a regular basis, creating a few posts a month is better than having none and can be very beneficial!
So what do you blog about? Anything and everything that is relevant to your business and industry.
The great thing about blogging is that it is very flexible! You can create reviews, share your opinion, teach, interview and so on…
Once you get into the swing of things you will notice that there really isn’t shortage of topics to blog about.
In fact, you may even be overwhelmed with the unlimited amount of blog posts you can create.
Creating Good Content
Content comes in many forms such as text, video, images, audio and so on.
The aim of creating good content is not only to get people to share it but to get people interested in what you do and your business.
If you are going to create content make sure you put in effort to make it as good as you can because there is no point creating half-assed that no one will use.
Also ensure that the content you create is based on what people like, need and want.
Simply put, ensure that you are providing value!
There is no better marketing technique than providing free value.
Participating in Online Communities
A fantastic way to increase your web traffic and reputation is to be become known online and there is no better way to do this than participating in various online communities related to your niche.
I’m personally a big fan of Forum posting.
When choosing a Forum you would like to participate in, it is a good idea to first ensure that it has a lot of active members and recent topics.
Secondly, I recommend that you check whether or not they allow signatures.
Forum posting is only powerful when signatures are allowed.
Once you sign up and set-up your profile and signature, all you need to do is position yourself as an expert by participating in discussions and providing people value by simply helping them. This will make people attracted to you and from curiosity they will click on your signature link to find out more about you.
After awhile you will also build a good reputation and people will begin to know and trust you.
This will result in more signature clicks to your website.
Who knows… You may even make some friends and find some good business partners in the process..
The worst possible thing you can do on a Forum is spam!
Not only will you get banned but you will also tarnish your reputation.
Blog Post Commenting
The good thing about commenting on blog posts is that you can simply speak your mind.
You can agree, disagree or even add information to the initial post.
However, whatever your response, it has to be smart and attention grabbing or else it will be like every other comment on the page and will go unnoticed.
You also need to make sure that the blog post will or is getting some traction, obviously if no one sees your amazing comment then there’s no point creating it in the first place…
Lastly, ensure that there is a place for you to put your link so when people read your comment they can find out more about you by visiting your site.
If there is no place to put your link then you can try add it at the bottom of your super smart post like a signature.
This is my super smart post.
The issue with this is that it may be seen as an advertisement and be removed as no one wants advertisement on their website.
This is the reason why I say your comment needs to be smart, so it provides real value and is not seen as spam.
Other Online Communities
• Question & Answers – Yahoo, The Q&A wiki, StackExchange, Quora, Spring.me
• StumbleUpon – All about web pages on the internet.
• Pinterest – All about photos.
• GoodReads – All about books.
• Care2 – All about starting petitions and supporting other peoples campaigns.
• Reddit – One of the biggest communities on the internet about people sharing their thoughts and news.
Guest Blogging is when you create a blog post on someone else’s website or when someones creates one on yours.
Not only is this a very good way to increasing your web traffic but for Search Engine Optimisation as well.
If you are the one posting an article on someone else’s website you need to ensure that the site is high quality, popular in your industry and relevant to the typical readers of your content.
The only downside to guest blogging is that you need to spend time gathering information and creating high quality articles but it is definitely worth it for the traffic and link-juice you get in return.
Also, if you are a new player in the industry you may find it hard to convince other bloggers to let you post on their site.
Additionally, you may also struggle to inspire others to want to contribute to your website as your audience may not yet be large enough to attract the ‘experts’.
In this day and age it is essential that you use social media platforms to promote your business.
No matter what industry you are in!
To use social media effectively you need to forget about selling and start thinking how you can solve peoples problems by answering questions, giving tips/tactics and even posting entertaining or inspiration images.
It all comes back to providing value. People will only continue to follow your social media pages if they believe they are getting some sort of value from you.
So how often should you post? This is what I recommend for the platforms listed above.
Please note that this is just my personal opinion and the amount of times you should post per a day can vary.
Just don’t overdo it as people will begin to treat your posts as spam.
Facebook: 1-2 times a day.
YouTube: 1-2 times a week.
Twitter: 3 or more times a day.
Linkedin: 1 time a day.
Google+: 1-2 a day.
Having a mailing list allows you to keep in touch with your existing followers and gives you a chance to build a strong relationship them.
This means that you will have a dedicated traffic source that is devoted to reading your content which means more traffic over time and a lower Bounce Rate.
Bounce Rate the percentage of visitors who navigate away from your website after viewing only one page.
Another advantage of having a mailing list is that there are people out there that don’t have much time.
These people can quickly read (or skim) through your content and if they like what they see, they will quickly subscribe to your list to receive your latest information when it’s released.
RSS Feeds have a very similar advantage to Mailing Lists.
They basically allow people to subscribe to your blog and are then notified when new content is available.
WordPress sites have an RSS Feed enabled by default and you can view yours by visit
For example, my RSS feed can be seen at www.peterstavrou.com/feed
Be Consistent, Don’t Give Up!
The most important factor in traffic building and in life is to be consistent and to never give up!
If you perform small tasks on a daily basis your efforts will eventually begin to snowball.
Getting started is the hardest part!
Staying motivated to keep going can also be difficult but once your efforts begin to pay off it becomes very easy.
It really is a shame when people work so hard and get so close to achieving their goal but quit just before the finish line…
Lucky when it comes to web traffic you can use Google Analytics to track your web traffic and determine where exactly it’s coming from.
This allows you to measure and visually see whether or not your efforts are paying off instead of blindly believing in what you are doing.
